How to make the pumpkin fairy house
Work through the four sections in order. You can also watch the full video on Instagram.
Part 1 of 4
Prepare the pumpkin
Cut the lid
Cut a circle around the stem. Angle the knife slightly inward so the lid will not fall through.
Lift off the lid
Pull the lid up by the stem and set it aside for later.
Hollow the pumpkin
Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp, then scrape the inside wall fairly smooth.
Part 2 of 4
Mark and cut the openings
Position the door
Hold the fairy door against the pumpkin where it sits flat and level.
Trace the opening
Trace the inner edge of the door with a marker, or carefully score the shape directly with the carving knife.
Cut inside the line
Cut along the traced or scored line.
Remove the cut piece
Push the cut piece outward from inside the pumpkin, then tidy any uneven edges.
Part 3 of 4
Add the door & windows
Fit the fairy door
Press the door into the opening. If the opening is cut tightly, the door will usually stay in place by itself. If needed, secure it with a small amount of glue.
Add the windows
Arrange the windows around the front and sides. Trace their inner edges, cut out the openings, and press the windows into place, just as you did with the door.
Part 4 of 4
Light and display the house
Add the light and lid
Switch on a small solar-powered LED light, place it inside the pumpkin, and put the lid back on.
Place the light inside
Center it behind the door and windows for an even glow.
Style the scene
Place the pumpkin among plants, moss, stones, or other fairy-garden details.
Enjoy the reveal
Turn down the surrounding lights and watch the little house glow.
Help the pumpkin last longer
A carved pumpkin is temporary, but these simple steps can slow deterioration:
- Start with a fresh pumpkin without soft spots or damaged skin.
- Remove all pulp and seeds and blot the inside dry.
- Keep it cool and shaded when it is not on display.
- Protect it from rain and wipe away condensation.
- Use an LED light only so no extra heat builds up inside.
